I have been a long time fan of the “transformation” type shows. My obsession started young watching What Not to Wear on TLC and seeing those ultra awesome makeovers on talk shows. I just couldn’t get enough of those before and after pictures. Home renovation shows are nothing but before and after photos so it’s no wonder why I gravitated towards them in the end.
I am perfectly aware that these are reality shows and not everything that happens is shown on camera. They are purely for entertainment and the drama they create is often obviously unrealistic. I’ve put together a list of my favorite home renovation shows on TV from my least of my favorite to my ultimate favorite.
4. Trading Spaces (TLC) 2000-2008
This was one of those shows that was more about the entertainment than the actual design. Two teams would trade homes and they would pick a room to redo for $1,000 in the other persons house. Sometimes they would absolutely hate the other persons design picks and sometimes they liked it. I don’t really know how real this show was but I do know that it was entertaining to watch!
3. Fixer Upper (HGTV)
I know i’ll probably get a lot of flack for not being completely enamored by Chip and Joanna but honestly they just aren’t my favorite. I do love their design aesthetic but sometimes it’s repetitive and its just kind of the same look in each home they fix up. It is filmed very well though with some nice comedic moments thrown in.
2. Design on a Dime (HGTV) 2000-2013
Ah an old favorite. I think I have always functioned on a low budget so I have learned to embrace and enjoy the challenge of a restricted design budget. In the show they take $1,000 and use it wisely to give a room makeover. It’s good to watch for some inspiration on DIY projects!
1. Good Bones
I feel like this show doesn’t get enough credit. I love the mother daughter duo! It’s my dream to buy a dilapidated home and fix it up exactly how I want. Some of the places they walk in are so gross i’m just like “Hell yea woman power!!”. Also the dynamic when Mina’s brother comes in to demo is hilarious.
Let me know which are your favorite home improvement shows? Are there any I am missing out on that I need to watch?
